The Cause
Melasma and hyperpigmentation are caused by overproduction of pigment by melanocytes. Although the exact underlying cause of melasma is poorly understood, ultraviolet radiation, genetics, thyroid autoimmunity, hyper-estrogenism (pregnancy, birth control, etc.), and anti-epileptic medications are known to be contributing factors.
