Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection caused by a poxvirus. It appears as small, smooth, dome-shaped bumps that may have a central indentation. Molluscum is generally harmless, but it can persist for months and spread to other areas of the skin or to close contacts.

Molluscum spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact and through contact with contaminated objects such as towels, clothing, or sports equipment. Scratching or picking at lesions can cause the virus to spread to nearby skin (auto-inoculation). In children, molluscum often spreads during play or sports; in adults, it may spread through close contact.

Yes. Molluscum often resolves on its own as the immune system clears the virus, but this can take months or even longer. Many patients choose treatment to shorten the course, reduce spread, minimize irritation, or for cosmetic reasons.

• Lesions are spreading or increasing in number
