Unwanted facial hair in women, also called hirsutism, is most commonly related to genetic or hormonal sensitivity. Some women have increased sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens even when hormone levels are normal. In other cases, conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or certain medications can contribute. Many patients with facial hair growth are otherwise healthy.

Facial hair growth most often appears on the upper lip, chin, jawline, and sideburn areas. Hair may be coarse, dark, or fast-growing, and even small amounts can be distressing depending on skin tone and hair type.

Eflornithine cream is a prescription topical treatment that works by slowing the rate of hair growth. It inhibits an enzyme involved in hair production, which leads to slower regrowth over time. It does not remove existing hair, but with consistent use, hair grows back more slowly and may become less noticeable.

Most patients notice improvement after 4–8 weeks of consistent use. Because hair growth cycles vary, continued application is needed to maintain results. If treatment is stopped, hair growth typically returns toward baseline over time.

Yes. Eflornithine is designed to be used alongside hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing, threading, or laser. Hair should be removed first, and the cream applied afterward as directed to slow regrowth.

If eflornithine is discontinued, hair growth gradually returns to its previous rate. The medication does not permanently remove hair, so ongoing use is needed for continued benefit.

Some patients experience mild skin irritation, redness, or acne-like bumps in the treated area, especially early on. Using a thin layer and moisturizing can help reduce irritation. Severe reactions are uncommon.

Often, yes. Teledermatology works well for unwanted facial hair when history and photos are clear. In-person evaluation may be recommended if facial hair growth is sudden, rapidly worsening, or accompanied by other signs of hormonal imbalance.

If facial hair growth begins suddenly or is associated with voice changes, irregular periods, or other systemic symptoms, in-person evaluation is recommended.
