Studies have shown comparable levels of DHT reduction between topical and oral finasteride in the scalp of patients taking 1mg finasteride orally once daily versus those applying finasteride 0.25% topically once daily. Side effects are rare but can include skin irritation and unusual hair growth. As systemic absorption of topical finasteride is lower than oral, the risk of side effects is theoretically less than oral finasteride, however side effects could possibly include sexual side effects including erectile dysfunction, gynecomastia, anxiety, increased risk of high grade prostate cancer, and depression. Seek medical attention if you experience any of the following: Chest pain or palpitations, dizziness or fainting, skin rash, blisters, itching, sudden weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet.
