The Cause
Eczema is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Patients with eczema have difficulty retaining moisture in their skin making their skin barrier weak and more susceptible to irritation from environmental triggers. Some environmental triggers include heat, perfumes, chemicals, detergents, soaps, nickel, smoke, and latex. In addition, allergy to foods such as eggs, milk, or peanut can trigger susceptible individuals.
Hypo-Allergenic Recommendations
Don't use soap in the shower on areas other than "smelly areas" (armpits, groin, and buttocks).
Avoid harsh chemicals, perfumes, and sanitizers.
When you are clear and not using prescription medication, moisturize daily after showers with vaseline, or a moisturizer for sensitive skin.
Don't use use dryer sheets, scented laundry detergent, or fabric softener.
