Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus types 1 & 2.

The virus lives in your spine and clinical reactivation (outbreaks) occur periodically. Triggers for reactivation can include trauma, UV exposure, fever, immunosuppression, or stress. Usually you can feel an outbreak coming on by tingling, stinging, pain, or irritation of the area affected.

Treatment for the herpes simplex virus consists of Valacyclovir (generic Valtrex), which stop viral replication.
